Breaking Ground, and Giving Back, in Mexico

Because she saw the need, in January 2004, the Washas opened the doors to La Gloria English School with three teachers, 50 students and a cadre of volunteers, offering classes to children, teenagers, and adults with emphasis on spoken English. Using their own money, they purchased a piece of land in La Gloria, Mexico and built the 1,400 square-foot building that houses the school.

According to volunteer teacher, Kate Pichotta, “I love doing this, and I think I can make a difference in their lives. Because of what they learn here, these children will be able to get better jobs, to be paid more, to have the incentive to climb the ladder.”

And for their generosity, the Washas are rewarded with a continual flow of pay it forward acts of kindness from all over the island and beyond. Those who know of the La Gloria English School project send donation packages with travelers who have trips planned to the island. The packages get dropped at La Gloria “courtesy of an ever-widening circle of people willing to act on their love for Isla.” Talk about paying it forward! Before the UK Kindness Movement was mainstream, there was a mini “Karma Army” in the UK, going by the name Join Me. It all started with an ad placed in a local London paper back in 2002 by a man named Danny Wallace:

“The Karma Army has now been going for getting on ten years… good people committed to performing one random act of kindness a week, being nice for the sake of… well… just being nice.”

Talk about Guerilla Goodness! Wallace even published a book about the “kindness cult” that was “started by accident.” Accident or not, The Join Me Blog has given UK do-gooders a place to connect and share… an idea we can totally get behind.

Kindness Collectives Around the World

Both intentional and random acts of kindness take on countless shapes and forms; each with a different mission, each with its own inspired purpose, each a story in itself. All of them good. World Kindness Australia: Founded From One Father’s Concern

Check out Australia, for instance. Recently we talked about bullying prevention and how it’s one of the greatest struggles facing our kids today.  We aren’t the only ones concerned; inspired by the desire to spread kindness and diminish bullying, World Kindness Australia was “formed by a father concerned about his young daughters and the prevailing growing culture of bullying in schools.”

Teen Deck Kindness Cards Provide Bully Prevention Activities

Many of the Boom Boom! Teen Deck acts of kindness cards were designed with the topic of bullying in mind and with the hope that they could help end this continuing problem by preventing it in the first place. Most of us have seen bullying portrayed in films or on TV with a “kids will be kids” mentality or as a “rite of passage” that we all must endure, but anyone who’s been the target of bullying or witnessed it firsthand, knows that those images and experiences tend to make light of a very real form of anxiety for kids.

If you’ve ever been bullied, you may recall the dread you felt on the way to school, the depression, loneliness, low self-esteem, or physical illness you might have battled. The torment bullying victims feel makes it hard for them to focus in the classroom, adding a substantial challenge to learning, as well as taking away from the joy of childhood, which should be a happy, carefree time.

Never Too Young For Acts of Kindness Lessons

Many educators have found that using Boom Boom! Cards as a voluntary classroom activity focused on kindness renders the best results because the kids are authentically engaged when they chose to take part on their own. By starting with kindness lessons early on, there’s a better chance students will preserve and enhance their positive character traits as they grow-up. You can kick off the class collaborative kind acts by letting students choose the charity that will receive 10 % of the cards’ purchase price. Keep us updated on your progress so we can work to spread the awareness, and the solutions you discover.
